The Bible teaches that people who reject God are given over to distorted thinking and become unreachable by human reasoning—It consistently frames this as a spiritual condition,
Below is a scriptural case that those who persistently reject God and His truth lose sound judgment and cannot be reasoned with, because God Himself gives them over.
I’ll include the study in a message form for your local home Sabbath gathering
1. God gives people over when they suppress truth
Romans 1:18–28 is the clearest and strongest passage.
“Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them…
But they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient.”
— Romans 1:19, 28 (KJV)
Key points from the passage:
- Truth is known, not absent (v.19–20)
- It is suppressed (v.18)
- God responds by giving them over (v.24, 26, 28)
- The result is a reprobate (ἀδόκιμος) mind — unapproved, debased, unable to judge rightly
This is not ignorance.
It is judicial blindness.
2. Spiritual blindness makes reason ineffective
Scripture is blunt: some people cannot understand spiritual truth.
“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
— 1 Corinthians 2:14
Not will not — cannot.
Reasoning fails because the discernment faculty is damaged.
3. God sends delusion to those who reject truth
This is not metaphorical.
“Because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.”
— 2 Thessalonians 2:10–11
Rejection of truth → God confirms deception.
4. Calling evil good is evidence of corrupted judgment
Isaiah describes a society where moral reasoning collapses.
“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil;
that put darkness for light, and light for darkness.”
— Isaiah 5:20
This is not a disagreement of opinion.
It is moral inversion, which Scripture treats as a sign of judgment.
5. God removes understanding from rebellious people
“The LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep,
and hath closed your eyes…
Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth…
their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men.”
— Isaiah 29:10, 13
When God removes understanding, conversation becomes circular and fruitless.
6. Some people cannot be corrected by reasoning
Proverbs is very direct.
“Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee…
Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.”
— Proverbs 9:7–8; 23:9
The issue is not lack of facts.
It is hatred of correction.
7. Hardened minds are resistant by design
“They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart.”
— Ephesians 4:18
Blindness here is moral and willful, not accidental.
Summary
Scripture clearly teaches:
- God gives people over when they reject truth (Romans 1)
- This results in distorted thinking and moral inversion
- Such people cannot be reasoned with spiritually
- The condition is judicial, not intellectual
- Final judgment belongs to God alone

MESSAGE MANUSCRIPT
“When God Gives Them Over: The Reprobate Mind”
Introduction
Brethren, we live in a time when reasoning has broken down.
Facts no longer persuade.
Truth no longer restrains.
Good is called evil, and evil is defended as virtue.
Many ask, “Why can’t they see it?”
“Why can’t they be reasoned with?”
“Why does logic fail?”
The Bible gives an answer—and it is not flattering to human pride.
Scripture teaches that when people repeatedly reject God and His truth, God Himself intervenes—not with enlightenment, but with judgment—by giving them over to a reprobate mind.
This is not psychology.
This is theology.
And it is written for our understanding.
I. Truth Is Known—but Suppressed
Turn with me to Romans 1.
“Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.”
— Romans 1:19
The problem is not lack of information.
The problem is suppression.
“Who hold the truth in unrighteousness.”
— Romans 1:18
God says humanity knows—but refuses.
Creation testifies.
Conscience testifies.
History testifies.
But truth is pushed down, silenced, mocked, and replaced.
II. Rejection of Truth Brings Divine Response
God does not remain passive forever.
Three times in Romans 1 we are told:
“Wherefore God also gave them up…” (v.24)
“For this cause God gave them up…” (v.26)
“God gave them over to a reprobate mind…” (v.28)
This is judicial language.
A reprobate mind (Greek adokimos) means:
- Disqualified
- Unapproved
- Unable to judge rightly
It does not mean insanity.
It means moral and spiritual malfunction.
III. The Reprobate Mind Cannot Be Reasoned With
Scripture is explicit that reasoning fails when spiritual discernment is gone.
“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God… neither can he know them.”
— 1 Corinthians 2:14
Not will not—cannot.
Truth sounds like foolishness.
Correction feels like attack.
Light feels like darkness.
This is why arguments go nowhere.
This is why debates spiral.
This is why evidence is rejected.
IV. God Sends Delusion to Those Who Reject Truth
This is one of the most sobering passages in the New Testament.
“Because they received not the love of the truth…
For this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.”
— 2 Thessalonians 2:10–11
Notice:
- The lie is not accidental
- The delusion is sent
- The cause is rejection of truth
When truth is despised long enough, deception becomes enforced.
V. Moral Inversion Is a Sign of Judgment
Isaiah described our time perfectly.
“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil;
that put darkness for light, and light for darkness.”
— Isaiah 5:20
This is not confusion.
This is reversal.
When conscience flips, society applauds what God condemns and condemns what God commands.
That is not progress.
That is judgment.
VI. Scripture Warns Against Wasting Words on Hardened Hearts
Proverbs gives us wisdom—not bitterness.
“Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee.”
— Proverbs 9:7
“Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.”
— Proverbs 23:9
There is a time to speak.
There is a time to stop speaking.
And there is a time to recognize that God has shut the door to understanding.
VII. Blindness Is a Heart Condition, Not an IQ Issue
Paul explains the root problem.
“They are darkened in their understanding… because of the blindness of their heart.”
— Ephesians 4:18
This blindness is:
- Willful
- Progressive
- Confirmed by God
That is why no amount of data fixes it.
Conclusion
The Bible is clear:
- Persistent rejection of God leads to loss of sound judgment
- God gives people over to a reprobate mind
- Such minds cannot be reasoned with spiritually
- Moral inversion is evidence of divine judgment
- Our duty is to witness, warn, and remain faithful
Brethren, we do not fear this age.
We understand it.
And we hold fast to the truth—knowing that God alone opens minds, and God alone closes them.
“He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.”
— Matthew 11:15
