Here’s a Bible study that shows (from Scripture) that God uses real “vehicles/crafts”—described as clouds, chariots, wheels, and fiery glory—to move, appear, and act in the created world.
I’ll keep it Bible-forward, and I’ll also note where some passages could be read as literal craft, versus symbolic/vision language (because the Bible uses both). At the end of the study I have a manuscript version for your Home Sabbath Gathering.
How would ancient men that had never seen any modern technology describe what they were seeing?
Even us “modern” people would have a problem understanding and describing it.
(CLOUDS THAT ARE NOT CLOUDS) Unveiling Heavenly Vessels of Scripture
1) “Clouds” as something God rides or uses to move/appear
Key texts
- Psalm 104:3 — “He makes the clouds His chariot…”
- Psalm 18:9–12 — God “came down… darkness under His feet… rode upon a cherub… wings of the wind… made darkness His covering…”
- Isaiah 19:1 — “Behold, the LORD rides on a swift cloud…”
- Daniel 7:13 — “One like the Son of Man… coming with the clouds of heaven…”
- Matthew 24:30 / Mark 13:26 / Luke 21:27 — the Son of Man “coming on/with the clouds”
- Acts 1:9–11 — a cloud “received Him out of their sight,” and He will return “in like manner”
- Revelation 1:7 — “He is coming with clouds…”
Observation
The Bible doesn’t only say God is in clouds; it repeatedly says He comes with, rides, or is carried by clouds. That language reads more like a transport/manifestation mode than just weather.
Study angle: If “cloud” is a kind of covering or carrier, it fits how God often appears: visible but veiled, close but not fully exposed.
2) “Chariots” of fire as real conveyances (not just poetry)
Elijah taken up
- 2 Kings 2:11–12 — “a chariot of fire and horses of fire… and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.”
This is one of the most straightforward “vehicle” moments: a distinct object (“chariot of fire”), associated with movement and separation.
Elisha’s servant shown the “army”
- 2 Kings 6:17 — “the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”
These aren’t presented as metaphors to encourage feelings—they’re shown as real (spiritual) military assets that were present but normally unseen.
God’s chariots as innumerable
- Psalm 68:17 — “The chariots of God are tens of thousands…”
3) The “wheels within wheels” and the moving throne-platform (Ezekiel)
Core passages
- Ezekiel 1:4–28 — whirlwind, great cloud, fire, brightness; living creatures; wheels; movement; sound like many waters.
- Ezekiel 10 — repeats and identifies elements as cherubim, and the throne-platform moves.
What the text emphasizes
- Movement and control: the wheels go “wherever the spirit wanted to go” (Ezek. 1).
- Structure: rims, wheels, intersecting motion, “appearance” like shining stone.
- A platform/throne above: something like a throne over the creatures (Ezek. 1:26).
Study angle: Ezekiel reads like he’s describing a mobile throne-chariot—a “throne that moves,” supported/escorted by living beings (cherubim), with a fiery/glorious energy field around it.
4) God’s “throne” as something that can be seen, approached, and moved
- Daniel 7:9–10 — thrones set in place; fiery stream; a court scene.
- Exodus 24:9–11 — elders “saw the God of Israel,” with something like sapphire pavement beneath.
- Exodus 25:22 — God speaks “from above the mercy seat, from between the cherubim” (Ark imagery mirrors throne/cherub pattern).
Connection idea: Cherubim + throne + glory/fire shows up in multiple places. Ezekiel’s moving throne fits that pattern—just in motion.
5) Fire, brightness, smoke: “glory” that behaves like a powerful manifestation
- Exodus 13:21–22 — pillar of cloud by day, fire by night to lead Israel.
- Exodus 19:16–19 — Sinai: smoke, fire, earthquake, trumpet-like sound, God descends.
- Exodus 40:34–38 — cloud covers tabernacle; glory fills it; movement cues travel.
- 1 Kings 8:10–11 — cloud fills the temple; priests cannot stand to minister.
Study angle: In several texts the cloud/fire isn’t random—it arrives, fills, leads, signals movement, and causes real physical effects (visibility, sound, inability to stand).
6) “The LORD rides a cherub” (vehicle + living beings)
- Psalm 18:10 — “He rode upon a cherub…”
- 2 Samuel 22:11 — same idea.
This pairs well with Ezekiel: living beings + moving platform/throne.
Putting it together: a simple biblical model
If you stitch the themes together, you get a consistent picture:
- God’s presence often comes in cloud/fire/glory
- God is described as riding or being carried (clouds, cherubim)
- There are chariots associated with God’s host
- Ezekiel gives the most detailed “mechanics” of a moving throne-chariot
So, yes—you can build a Bible-only case that these are actual conveyances/crafts God uses (especially in the spiritual realm), even if they appear to humans as cloud, fire, brightness, whirlwind.
A responsible note (still Bible-based)
Some of these passages are narrative events (e.g., 2 Kings 2; 2 Kings 6) and read very literal. Others are vision reports (Ezekiel, Daniel), which can contain symbolic elements even while describing real things. The Bible itself sometimes signals this by calling something a “vision” or by using “appearance like…”
That doesn’t weaken the case—it just helps you present it carefully: real, but not always described in modern technical terms.

Here is a one-page style Bible study handout showing how Scripture describes God using clouds, fire, chariots, and throne-structures as real conveyances of His presence and activity.
GOD’S HEAVENLY VEHICLES IN SCRIPTURE (NKJV)
1. GOD RIDES CLOUDS
Psalm 104:3
“He makes the clouds His chariot…”
Isaiah 19:1
“Behold, the LORD rides on a swift cloud…”
Acts 1:9
“…a cloud received Him out of their sight.”
Matthew 24:30
“…coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”
Observation:
Clouds are repeatedly described as something God rides, comes with, or is carried by—not merely weather, but a vehicle of divine manifestation.
2. FIERY CHARIOTS OF GOD
2 Kings 2:11
“…a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire… and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.”
2 Kings 6:17
“…the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”
Psalm 68:17
“The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of thousands…”
Observation:
These are described as visible, numerous, mobile, and purposeful—more than poetic imagery.
3. EZEKIEL’S MOVING THRONE-CRAFT
Ezekiel 1:4–5,16–17,26 (selected NKJV)
“I looked, and behold, a whirlwind… a great cloud with raging fire…”
“…the appearance of the wheels and their workings was like the color of beryl…”
“…their appearance and their workings was, as it were, a wheel in the middle of a wheel.”
“…above… was the likeness of a throne…”
Observation:
Ezekiel describes:
- motion in multiple directions
- structured wheels
- radiant energy/fire
- a throne platform above
This reads like a mobile throne-chariot escorted by living beings (cherubim).
4. GOD RIDES CHERUBIM
Psalm 18:10
“And He rode upon a cherub, and flew; He flew upon the wings of the wind.”
2 Samuel 22:11
“And He rode upon a cherub, and flew…”
5. GOD’S GLORY MANIFESTS AS FIRE + CLOUD
Exodus 13:21
“The LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud… and by night in a pillar of fire…”
Exodus 40:34–35
“…the cloud covered the tabernacle… and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.”
1 Kings 8:10–11
“…the cloud filled the house of the LORD… the glory of the LORD filled the house…”
Observation:
The cloud/fire:
- arrives intentionally
- fills space
- leads people
- signals movement
- prevents approach
This behaves like a controlled manifestation, not random atmosphere.
SUMMARY SCRIPTURAL PATTERN
Across the Bible, God’s presence is repeatedly associated with:
Element | Function in Scripture |
Cloud | Vehicle, covering, transport |
Fire | Power, energy, glory |
Chariots | Mobility, heavenly army |
Wheels | Movement mechanism |
Cherubim | Bearers/escorts |
Throne | Command center |
Combined Pattern:
➡ Moving throne + wheels + living bearers + fire + cloud =
A mobile divine platform.
✅ Balanced Conclusion (Scripture-based):
The Bible consistently portrays God’s presence as traveling and appearing through structured, mobile manifestations described as clouds, chariots, wheels, and fiery glory.
Some passages are historical narrative, others are visions—but together they form a unified biblical picture of real heavenly conveyances used by God.

Here is a clear manuscript outline you can preach or teach from, based entirely on NKJV Scripture and organized for flow, emphasis, and application.
MESSAGE OUTLINE
“The Chariots of God: His Heavenly Vehicles in Scripture”
Theme:
The Bible consistently describes God’s presence as moving, appearing, and acting through visible manifestations called clouds, fire, chariots, and throne-structures.
Key Truth:
God is not distant or static—He is a living King who comes, rides, descends, and returns.
I. GOD RIDES THE CLOUDS (Divine Transportation Language)
Text: Psalm 104:3
“He makes the clouds His chariot…”
Supporting Scriptures
- Isaiah 19:1 — “The LORD rides on a swift cloud…”
- Acts 1:9 — A cloud received Christ out of sight.
- Matthew 24:30 — Christ returns on clouds.
Point:
Scripture repeatedly describes clouds as something God uses, not just something around Him.
Teaching Emphasis:
Cloud = covering + carrier + glory veil.
Application:
God’s movements may be hidden, but He is always active.
II. THE FIERY CHARIOTS OF HEAVEN (God’s Army and Transport)
Text: 2 Kings 2:11
“A chariot of fire… and Elijah went up…”
Supporting
- 2 Kings 6:17 — Mountain full of chariots of fire.
- Psalm 68:17 — “The chariots of God are twenty thousand…”
Point:
God possesses real heavenly forces that normally remain unseen.
Teaching Emphasis:
Heaven has organization, structure, and power.
Application:
Believers are never alone—even when they cannot see God’s protection.
III. EZEKIEL’S VISION — THE MOBILE THRONE
Text: Ezekiel 1 (selected)
Key descriptions:
- whirlwind
- cloud + fire
- wheels within wheels
- movement in all directions
- throne above
Point:
God’s throne is not stationary—it is mobile.
Cross Reference: Daniel 7:9–10 — throne + fire + court
Teaching Emphasis:
God rules everywhere at once. His throne is not limited to one location.
Application:
There is nowhere God cannot reach you.
IV. GOD RIDES CHERUBIM (Living Bearers of His Throne)
Text: Psalm 18:10
“He rode upon a cherub and flew…”
Point:
Heavenly beings serve as attendants and bearers of God’s presence.
Connection:
Ezekiel identifies throne creatures as cherubim (Ezekiel 10).
Application:
God’s kingdom is structured and ordered, not chaotic.
V. FIRE + CLOUD = GOD’S MANIFEST PRESENCE
Texts
- Exodus 13:21 — pillar of cloud and fire leads Israel
- Exodus 40:34 — cloud fills tabernacle
- 1 Kings 8:11 — glory fills temple
Pattern
When God appears physically:
- cloud
- fire
- brightness
- sound
- shaking
Point:
These are consistent manifestations of divine arrival.
Application:
When God moves, things change visibly and powerfully.
VI. THE RETURN OF CHRIST — SAME PATTERN
Texts
- Matthew 24:30 — coming with clouds
- Revelation 1:7 — every eye will see Him
- Acts 1:11 — returns same way He left
Point:
The future return of Christ follows the same divine manifestation pattern seen throughout Scripture.
CENTRAL DOCTRINAL SUMMARY
Biblical Pattern of Divine Movement
God appears through:
- Clouds → vehicle/covering
- Fire → power/glory
- Chariots → transport/army
- Wheels → motion system
- Cherubim → throne bearers
- Throne → authority center
Conclusion Statement:
From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible consistently portrays God as a King who travels, appears, and acts through real heavenly conveyances.
CLOSING EXHORTATION
Psalm 68:4
“Extol Him who rides on the clouds…”
Final Charge:
If God rides the clouds, commands heavenly hosts, and rules from a moving throne—
then He is not distant from your life today.
➡ The King who rides the heavens is able to intervene on earth.
