THE RAPTURE

NO Pre Trib Rapture

Study Title: “The Rapture: Is It Really in the Bible?”

Introduction

Today, I want to lovingly and truthfully address a doctrine that has become very popular in the modern church: the rapture—the belief that Jesus will secretly come and snatch away believers before a period of great tribulation. While this teaching has stirred much imagination and many books, we must ask: Is it actually found in Scripture? As always, we do not base our faith on tradition, emotion, or popular teaching—but on the Word of God alone.

I. The Word “Rapture” is Not in the Bible
Let us begin with a simple truth: the word rapture does not appear in any Bible translation. It comes from a Latin word rapturo, which is used to translate “caught up” in 1 Thessalonians 4:17. But we must ask—does caught up mean a secret, pre-tribulation removal of the church? Let's read the verse in context.

1 Thessalonians 4:16–17
“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

Notice this is not secret. There is a shout, a voice, and the trumpet of God—public, loud, and glorious! This is the Second Coming, not a hidden event.

II. Jesus Returns One Time, Not Twice
The rapture doctrine teaches that Jesus comes once secretly, and then again publicly after seven years. But Scripture never teaches two second comings.

Hebrews 9:28
“So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.”

Jesus comes a second time—not a third. Scripture consistently describes one visible return, not two phases.

III. The Wicked Are Destroyed When Christ Comes
Some teach that when the rapture happens, the righteous disappear and the wicked remain alive on Earth. But Scripture says the opposite.

2 Thessalonians 1:7–8
“When the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God…”

When Jesus is revealed, the wicked are judged.

Matthew 24:37–39
“As the days of Noah were... the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”

Who was taken in Noah’s day? The wicked were taken away in judgment—not the righteous.

IV. The “Left Behind” Misunderstanding
This popular idea that some are “left behind” comes from misunderstanding Matthew 24:40–41.

“Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.”

But go back to verse 39:

“The flood came and took them all away...”

Again, it was the wicked who were taken. The idea that the righteous are taken and the wicked left behind flips Jesus’ words completely upside down.

V. God’s People Go Through Tribulation, Not Escape It
The Bible never promises that God’s people will escape tribulation—it promises that we will endure it through His strength.

John 16:33
“In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

Acts 14:22
“We must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.”

God has always preserved His people through trials, not by taking them out of them. Noah was not taken away before the flood—he was preserved in the flood. Daniel was not taken out of Babylon—he was protected in it.

VI. The Resurrection Happens at Christ’s Return
Jesus said plainly when the resurrection would occur:

John 6:40
“And I will raise him up at the last day.”

Paul also said:

1 Corinthians 15:52
“In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump... the dead shall be raised incorruptible.”

This is not before tribulation—it is at the last day, the last trumpet, at Jesus’ final return.

Conclusion
Friends, the doctrine of a secret rapture is not taught in Scripture. It is a relatively modern invention, first popularized in the 1800s. Instead, the Bible teaches that Jesus will return once, visibly, audibly, and with power and glory. The righteous will rise, the wicked will be judged, and the Earth will be made new.

Let us not place our hope in escape, but in Christ’s return and our call to endure faithfully until the end.

Revelation 2:10
“Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.”
