WE HAVE NO IMMORTAL SOUL

TRUTH IS WE DO NOT GO TO HEAVEN OR HELL WHEN WE DIE.
We sleep in the grave till the resurrection.

The idea that humans have an innate, immortal soul is a popular belief, but the Bible actually teaches that the soul is mortal—it can die, be destroyed, or cease to exist.

Here’s the scriptural evidence:

Alright, let’s walk through this carefully — not just cherry-picking verses, but showing from multiple angles in Scripture that:

  1. Humans do not possess an inherently immortal soul.
  2. The soul is mortal and can die.
  3. Immortality is a gift from God through resurrection — not something we already have.

1. The Soul Is the Person, Not an Immortal Entity Inside Us

The Bible’s Hebrew word for “soul” is נֶפֶשׁ (nephesh) and in Greek ψυχή (psuchē).
It simply means a living being, life, or person — not an indestructible spirit-part.

  • Genesis 2:7 – “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul (nephesh).”
Notice: Man became a soul — he doesn’t have a soul that is separate from his body.
  • Ezekiel 18:4 – “Behold, all souls are mine… the soul that sinneth, it shall die.”
This flatly states the soul can die.

2. The Soul Can Die

Scripture repeatedly teaches that souls (people) are mortal.

  • Ezekiel 18:20 – “The soul that sinneth, it shall die…”
No hint of an immortal inner self continuing after death.
  • Joshua 11:11 – “…they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them: there was not any left to breathe…”
If souls were immortal, this verse would be nonsense.

3. Death = Unconsciousness, Not Life in Another Realm

The Bible describes the dead as silent, unconscious, and inactive — not alive in heaven or hell yet.

  • Ecclesiastes 9:5 – “For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.”
  • Psalm 146:4 – “His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.”
  • Job 14:12 – “…so man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.”

4. Only God Has Immortality

If we already had an immortal soul, these verses would be unnecessary.

  • 1 Timothy 6:15–16 – “…the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto…”
  • Romans 2:7 – “…To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life…”
We must seek immortality — we do not naturally have it.

5. Immortality Comes at the Resurrection

We will be given immortality at Christ’s return, not before.

  • 1 Corinthians 15:51–54 – “…we shall all be changed… For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality… then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.”
  • John 5:28–29 – “…all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth…”

Summary from Scripture:

  • The “soul” is simply the living being — body + breath of life.
  • Souls die (Ezekiel 18:4, 20).
  • Death is a state of unconscious sleep until the resurrection.
  • Only God has immortality now.
  • Immortality is given to the righteous at the resurrection, not something we inherently possess.

1. The Soul Can Die

Ezekiel 18:4 – “Behold, all souls are mine; the soul that sinneth, it shall die.”
Ezekiel 18:20 – “The soul that sinneth, it shall die…”

  • The Hebrew word here for soul is נֶפֶשׁ (nephesh), which simply means a living being, person, or creature—not an immortal, ghost-like essence.
  • God says plainly: souls die when they sin and do not repent. If souls were immortal, this statement would be meaningless.

2. Souls Are Living Beings, Not Immortal Ghosts

Genesis 2:7 – “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

  • Adam became a soul—he didn’t receive one as a separate, immortal part.
  • The word nephesh is used for animals too (Genesis 1:20, 1:21). They are “living souls” as well, yet they die.

3. The Dead Are Unconscious

Ecclesiastes 9:5 – “For the living know that they shall die
