BEYOND THE FEAR OF DEATH

BEYOND THE FEAR OF DEATH

How Great Loss Changes Our View of This Temporary Life

There are losses so deep that they permanently change how we see life. When we lose the person—or the family—we loved most, the things of this world may no longer seem important. Possessions, recognition, success, and even longevity can lose their hold upon us.

After experiencing what we feared most, death itself no longer frighten us. However, Scripture draws an important distinction: not fearing death is faith; deliberately seeking death is despair.

Our hope is not in dying. Our hope is in the resurrection from the dead and the eternal future Yahweh has promised.

1. Grief Can Change Everything We Value

Paul suffered the loss of status, security, relationships, and nearly everything this world considers valuable. Those losses changed how he viewed earthly life.

Philippians 3:7–8

“But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Yeshau. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Yeshua my Elohim .”

Once we have suffered tremendous loss, many things that once appeared important become small:

  • Material possessions cannot replace the person we lost.
  • Success cannot silence loneliness.
  • Recognition cannot heal a broken heart.
  • Money cannot purchase one more moment with someone who has died.
  • Human approval cannot give us eternal life.

Ecclesiastes 1:2

“Vanity of vanities, saith the Teacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.”

Loss exposes the temporary nature of this world. It teaches us that nothing physical can be held forever.

1 Timothy 6:7

“For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.”

2. Yahweh Understands the Heart Crushed by Loss

Deep grief is not evidence that we lack faith. Many faithful servants of Yahweh experienced overwhelming sorrow.

Psalm 34:18

“Yahweh is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”

Yahweh does not stand far away from those who are brokenhearted. He draws near to them.

Psalm 56:8

“Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?”

Not one tear is overlooked. Yahweh knows every lonely night, every empty chair, and every memory that suddenly becomes painful.

Psalm 147:3

“He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.”

Some wounds may never completely disappear during this physical life. Nevertheless, Yahweh promises that our suffering is seen and that complete healing will ultimately come.

3. Even Faithful Servants Sometimes Felt That They Could Not Continue

The Bible speaks honestly about despair. It does not hide the fact that righteous people sometimes became so weary that they wished their lives would end.

After fleeing from Jezebel, Elijah reached a moment of exhaustion and despair.

1 Kings 19:4

“But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die.”

Yahweh did not condemn Elijah for feeling overwhelmed. Neither did He grant Elijah’s request to die. Instead, Yahweh gave him:

  • Rest
  • Food
  • His comforting presence
  • Renewed purpose
  • Someone to walk beside him

This teaches us something essential: when a person cannot see a reason to continue, Yahweh may still have work for that person to do.

Job also spoke from the depths of unbearable grief.

Job 3:11

“Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?”

Job had lost his children, his possessions, his health, and the life he had known. His words came from anguish, but his anguish was not the end of his story.

Job 42:12

“So Yahweh blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning.”

The lesson is not that every loss will be replaced during this physical life. It is that we should never judge the end of our story from its darkest chapter.

4. Scripture Does Not Require Us to Pretend That Death Is Pleasant

Death is called an enemy.

1 Corinthians 15:26

“The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.”

Death separates families. It ends conversations, leaves empty rooms, and brings sorrow to those who remain. Death is not our friend or our savior.

However, because Yahweh will destroy death, we do not have to live under its fear.

Hebrews 2:14–15

Yeshua came to deliver those who:

“Through fear of death were all their lifetime subject subject subject to bondage.”

Fear of death can keep a person in lifelong bondage. Faith in Yahweh’s promise releases us from that bondage.

That does not mean we seek death. It means we no longer allow the fear of death to control us.

5. Death Is a Sleep, Not the End of Our Story

The Bible repeatedly describes death as sleep because the dead will awaken in the resurrection.

Ecclesiastes 9:5

“For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing.”

Daniel 12:2

“And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake.”

John 11:11–14

Speaking of Lazarus, Yeshua said:

“Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.”

Yeshua then told His disciples plainly:

“Lazarus is dead.”

Lazarus was not permanently gone. He was asleep in death until Yeshua called him from the grave.

This is why followers of The Way can face death without believing that death has won.

6. Our Hope Is Not Death—It Is the Resurrection

Paul did not teach that death itself was the believer’s reward. His hope was the resurrection.

Acts 24:15

“And have hope toward God… that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.”

Philippians 3:10–11

“That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection… if by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.”

The biblical hope is not that death releases an immortal soul. The hope is that Yahweh will raise the dead and give eternal life.

1 Corinthians 15:52–53

“The dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.”

We are mortal now. Immortality is something Yahweh will give at the resurrection.

7. Grief Causes Us to Look Beyond This Temporary World

Paul contrasted present suffering with the glory that Yahweh will reveal.

Romans 8:18

“For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”

Our present suffering is real, but it is temporary. It cannot compare with the future Yahweh is preparing.

2 Corinthians 4:17–18

“For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.”

The things we see now are temporary:

  • Our bodies are temporary.
  • Our homes are temporary.
  • Our possessions are temporary.
  • This present society is temporary.
  • Separation through death is temporary.

Yahweh’s promises are eternal.

Hebrews 11:13

The faithful understood that they were:

“Strangers and pilgrims on the earth.”

When loss loosens our attachment to this world, we begin to understand more deeply that this present life is not everything.

8. The Promise of Reunion

Paul told believers not to grieve like those who have no hope.

1 Thessalonians 4:13–14

“I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.”

Paul did not say that we should not grieve. He said we should not grieve without hope.

1 Thessalonians 4:16

“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout… and the dead in Christ shall rise first.”

The dead will hear Yeshua’s voice and rise.

John 5:28–29

“The hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth.”

The empty chair is not the end.

The silent voice is not gone forever.

The grave is not the final destination.

A resurrection is coming.

9. We Do Not Need to Fear Those Who Can Kill the Body

Yeshua taught His followers not to allow the threat of physical death to control their faithfulness.

Matthew 10:28

“And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.”

Men may take physical life, but they cannot prevent Yahweh from raising His faithful servants.

Romans 14:8

“For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord.”

Our lives belong to Yahweh. Therefore, we do not have to cling fearfully to life, nor do we have the authority to throw it away.

We place both our life and our future in Yahweh’s hands.

10. Being Ready to Die Is Not the Same as Wanting to Die

Paul understood this distinction.

Philippians 1:21–24

“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

Paul knew that death could not take away his future with Yahweh. Yet he continued:

“Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.”

Paul was prepared to die, but he recognized that remaining alive served a purpose. Other people still needed him.

This gives us the proper balance:

Freedom from fear

Surrender to despair

“Death cannot take away my resurrection.”

“My life has no remaining value.”

“My future is secure in Yahweh.”

“There is no reason to continue.”

“I will remain faithful until my time comes.”

“I should hasten my death.”

“Whether I live or die, I belong to Yahweh.”

“My life belongs only to me.”

Biblical courage says:

“I am not afraid to die, but while Yahweh gives me life, I will faithfully live.”

11. We Are Still Here for a Purpose

Great loss may make us feel that our purpose has ended. Scripture shows that Yahweh can still use someone who is grieving, aging, lonely, or broken.

Psalm 92:14

“They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing.”

As long as Yahweh gives us breath, there may still be:

  • Truth to proclaim
  • Encouragement to give
  • Wisdom to share
  • Someone lonely to comfort
  • Someone deceived to warn
  • Someone suffering whom only we can understand
  • An example of faithfulness to leave behind

2 Corinthians 1:3–4

Yahweh comforts us:

“That we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted.”

Even our grief can become a means of helping another brokenhearted person.

12. Our Lives and Times Belong to Yahweh

David placed his future in Yahweh’s hands.

Psalm 31:14–15

“But I trusted in thee, O Yahweh: I said, Thou art my God. My times are in thy hand.”

We need not fear the day of our death. Neither must we decide that day for ourselves. Our times are in Yahweh’s hands.

Job 14:5

“Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee.”

Our calling is to remain faithful for whatever time Yahweh gives us.

Matthew 24:13

“But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.”

Endurance does not always look heroic. Sometimes endurance means simply getting through one painful night, then rising to face another day.

13. The Day Is Coming When Loss Will End Forever

The freedom we experience is not based on pretending that grief does not hurt. It comes from believing that grief will not last forever.

Revelation 21:4

“And Yahweh shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain.”

Notice what Yahweh promises to remove:

  • Death
  • Sorrow
  • Crying
  • Pain

Everything that has wounded us belongs to this temporary age. None of it will exist forever.

Isaiah 25:8

“He will swallow up death in victory; and Yahweh God will wipe away tears from off all faces.”

Death will not have the final word.

Yahweh will.

What Great Loss Can Teach Us

Great loss can teach us that:

  1. This physical life is temporary.
  2. Material things cannot satisfy the deepest needs of the heart.
  3. Death should not control us through fear.
  4. The dead are asleep and will awaken.
  5. Our hope is the resurrection—not death itself.
  6. Separation from those we love is temporary.
  7. Yahweh still has a purpose for us while we remain alive.
  8. Our lives and our appointed times belong to Him.
  9. A world without death, sorrow, or separation is coming.

Conclusion: Death Is Not Our Hope—Resurrection Is

After losing those we love most, we will never see this world in the same way again. Its promises seem smaller. Its possessions seem less valuable. Its threats lose their power.

We have learned that everything physical can be taken from us.

But Yahweh’s promises cannot be taken.

We do not need to fear death, because Yeshua has promised a resurrection. Yet we do not seek death, because the life we still possess belongs to Yahweh. Until our appointed time, we remain here for a purpose.

We endure.

We proclaim the truth.

We comfort others.

We finish the work placed before us.

When our appointed time finally comes, we can close our eyes without terror—certain that the next moment we know will be the awakening.

1 Corinthians 15:54–55

“Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?”

Death is not our destination.

Resurrection is.

A Prayer for the Brokenhearted

Yahweh, You know the depth of my loss and the emptiness it has left within me. You have seen every tear and heard every cry that no one else could hear.

Help me understand that although this life is temporary, it still belongs to You. When I cannot see a reason to continue, remind me that You may still have work for me to accomplish and someone for me to help.

Remove my fear of death, but also protect me from despair. Help me remain faithful until my appointed time. Keep my eyes fixed upon the resurrection, when the dead will awaken and every painful separation will finally end.

Give me strength to endure today and faith to trust You with tomorrow.

In Yeshua’s name, amen.

[Intro]
“I am Yahweh; that is My name.”
“Yahweh, the Elohim of your fathers—
this is My name forever.”

[Verse 1]
From the fire that burned before Moses,
Came the voice no man could tame:
“I AM the One who always will be,
And Yahweh is My name.”
The Elohim of Abraham,
Of Isaac and Israel—
From generation to generation,
Let every nation tell.

[Pre-Chorus]
Though men may hide it beneath a title,
Though tradition veils the Word,
The name written through the ages
Will once again be heard.

[Chorus]
Yahweh—Your name forever,
Most High over all the earth.
Yahweh—there is no other;
Let every heart proclaim Your worth.
Yeshua—Yahweh saves us,
The Anointed One who came.
We will remember, we will honor,
We will call upon Your name.

[Verse 2]
Nearly seven thousand witnesses
Stand written on every page;
Yet men replaced Your holy name
As the centuries turned their age.
But ink cannot erase the truth,
And customs cannot prevail;
Your name remains from age to age—
Your Word will never fail.

[Pre-Chorus]
You said, “I am Yahweh;
That is My name alone.”
No title made by human hands
Can take away Your throne.

[Chorus]
Yahweh—Your name forever,
Most High over all the earth.
Yahweh—there is no other;
Let every heart proclaim Your worth.
Yeshua—Yahweh saves us,
The Anointed One who came.
We will remember, we will honor,
We will call upon Your name.

[Verse 3]
Yeshua came in His Father’s name,
Salvation in His call;
He manifested Yahweh’s name
To those who heard and followed.
Not merely words upon our lips,
But truth that we obey;
The name of Yahweh is our refuge,
Our strength along The Way.

[Bridge]
A book of remembrance lies open
For those who fear Your name;
Those who speak of You together,
Whose hearts remain aflame.
And everyone who calls upon
The name Yahweh has given
Will find deliverance and mercy—
A promise sealed in heaven.

[Breakdown]
Not forgotten—
Not forsaken—
Not erased by passing time.
Yahweh—
Yeshua—
Your names forever shine.

[Final Chorus]
Yahweh—Your name forever,
Most High over all the earth.
Yahweh—there is no other;
Let all creation sing Your worth.
Yeshua—Yahweh saves us,
Our Messiah and our King.
We will remember, we will honor;
Of Your holy name we sing.

Yahweh—Your name forever,
Let every tongue proclaim.
Yeshua—our salvation;
All glory to Your name.

[Outro]
From generation to generation,
Your truth remains the same:
Yahweh, our Creator Father—
Forever is Your name.

[Intro]

The earth was restored for mankind.
Mankind was created for a purpose.
Yeshua came to open the way.
And the Kingdom of Yahweh is coming!

[Verse 1]

In the beginning, Yahweh formed the earth,
He filled it with beauty, with promise and worth.
He fashioned mankind in His image and plan,
And gave this world to the children of man.

Not born without purpose, not made just to die,
Not destined forever to dwell in the sky.
Created for glory, His character to bear,
To enter His family and His Kingdom share.

[Pre-Chorus]

The suffering will end,
The broken will be healed.
The government of Yahweh
Will finally be revealed!

[Chorus]

The Kingdom is coming!
The Kingdom is near!
Yeshua will reign,
And the nations will hear!

The darkness will fall,
And the truth will arise.
Yahweh will dwell
With His children for all time!

The Kingdom is coming—
Let all the earth sing!
Prepare the way,
Prepare for the King!

[Verse 2]

Mankind chose rebellion and followed his way,
Bringing war and oppression, confusion and pain.
But Yahweh remembered the work of His hands,
And sent His own Son with redemption for man.

Yeshua surrendered His life for our sin,
Opening the way to be born again.
The firstborn of many, the faithful and true,
He conquered the grave and will make all things new.

[Pre-Chorus]

So repent and believe,
Walk faithfully!
For those who overcome
Will reign eternally!

[Chorus]

The Kingdom is coming!
The Kingdom is near!
Yeshua will reign,
And the nations will hear!

The darkness will fall,
And the truth will arise.
Yahweh will dwell
With His children for all time!

The Kingdom is coming—
Let all the earth sing!
Prepare the way,
Prepare for the King!

[Verse 3]

The trumpet will sound and the dead will arise,
The faithful transformed in the blink of an eye.
No longer corrupted, no longer in pain,
As children of Yahweh, with Yeshua they’ll reign.

His Torah from Zion will cover the land,
And every great nation will learn His commands.
The swords will be broken, the warfare will cease,
And all of creation will flourish in peace.

[Bridge]

The desert will blossom!
The blind eyes will see!
The wolf and the lamb
Will dwell peacefully!

The graves will be opened!
The captives set free!
And knowledge of Yahweh
Will cover the sea!

No sorrow!
No crying!
No darkness!
No pain!

The final great enemy—
Death will be slain!

[Final Chorus]

The Kingdom is coming!
The Kingdom is near!
Yeshua will reign,
And the nations will hear!

All kingdoms will fall
Before Yahweh’s throne.
The earth and its fullness
Will finally be His own!

The Kingdom is coming—
Let all the earth sing!
Prepare the way,
Prepare for the King!

[Outro]

That is why the earth was restored.
That is why mankind was created.
To bear the image of Yahweh,
To be born into His family,
And to reign in His Kingdom forever.

Yahweh’s Kingdom is coming!

His will shall be done
On earth as in heaven.

Come, Yeshua—
Come and reign!
