DNA studies have been done that proves the people in the nation called Israel today are descendant from the tribe of Israel called Judah
Several well-known DNA studies have found that many present-day Jewish populations (including those in the State of Israel) share substantial ancestry with the ancient populations of the southern Levant, consistent with historical descent from the ancient Israelites.
The strongest studies include:
1. Agranat-Tamir et al. (2020) — The Genomic History of the Bronze Age Southern Levant
Published in the journal Cell.
Researchers analyzed DNA from 73 ancient individuals from Bronze and Iron Age sites in present-day Israel and Jordan.
They concluded:
- Most modern Jewish populations show significant genetic continuity with ancient Levantine populations.
- The genomes of most present-day Jewish groups are consistent with deriving 50% or more of their ancestry from populations related to those living in the Bronze Age southern Levant.
2. Behar et al. (2010)
This landmark study compared Jewish populations from Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
The researchers found:
- Ashkenazi, Sephardi, and Mizrahi Jewish populations cluster genetically together.
- They share common Middle Eastern ancestry despite centuries of dispersion.
- The results support a common ancestral origin in the Levant.
What these studies do prove
The evidence shows that modern Jewish populations have:
- Significant ancestry from the ancient peoples of the southern Levant.
- Shared ancestry with populations that lived in the land of Israel thousands of years ago.
- Genetic continuity despite later migrations and admixture.
From a biblical perspective, we understand that the Jewish people include descendants primarily of Judah, Benjamin, and Levi, with individuals from other tribes having joined the Kingdom of Judah over time (for example, 2 Chronicles 11:13–17 and 15:9).
