Outer Darkness: Beyond the Expanding Universe

Outer Darkness: Beyond the Expanding Universe

I remember as a child in school learning about the universe. We were told the universe was like a balloon ever expanding.  I ask that if the balloon is ever expanding, what is it expanding into? If it is expanding there is an area outside its expansion. Where not even light has reached yet.

I thought of this outer darkness being where satan and his demons will be cast when I saw the movie Superman II in 1980. Where the bad guys were cast into the “Phantom Zone”.

Hollywood’s Phantom Zone makes a powerful visual comparison to the outer darkness:

  • The offenders are expelled from their former dwelling.
  • They are restrained and unable to escape.
  • They travel through a vast region of darkness.
  • They remain conscious of their confinement.

This resembles Jude’s description:

“And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness...”
—Jude 6

It also recalls:

“For if Elohim did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness…”
—2 Peter 2:4

Our Tears Have an Expiration Date (song)

 [Verse 1]

When the night has lasted longer
Than I ever thought it would,
When I’ve cried and prayed in silence,
Still believing You are good—
You have seen each hidden teardrop,
You have heard each whispered prayer;
Even when I cannot feel You,
Yahweh, You are always there.

[Pre-Chorus]
The darkness has a boundary,
The night will meet the dawn;
This sorrow is not forever—
Morning light will come.

[Chorus]
Our tears have an expiration date,
Weeping may endure through the night;
But joy comes in the morning,
With the breaking of the light.
Yahweh turns our mourning into dancing,
He will make all broken things right;
Our tears have an expiration date—
Joy is coming with the morning light.

[Verse 2]
Waiting does not mean forgotten,
Silence does not mean unheard;
Every promise has an hour,
Yahweh watches every word.
What was planted through our weeping
Will be harvested with joy;
What the years of pain have taken,
Yahweh’s hand can still restore.

[Pre-Chorus]
The darkness has a boundary,
The night will meet the dawn;
This sorrow is not forever—
Morning light will come.

[Chorus]
Our tears have an expiration date,
Weeping may endure through the night;
But joy comes in the morning,
With the breaking of the light.
Yahweh turns our mourning into dancing,
He will make all broken things right;
Our tears have an expiration date—
Joy is coming with the morning light.

[Bridge]
Every tear is known by Yahweh,
Every sorrow has been seen;
Every prayer is held before Him,
Even while we wait and grieve.
When Yeshua comes in glory,
And the sleeping ones arise,
Yahweh will remove our sorrow
And wipe the tears from every eye.

[Final Chorus]
Our tears have an expiration date,
Weeping may endure through the night;
But joy comes in the morning,
With the breaking of the light.
Yahweh turns our mourning into dancing,
He will make all broken things right;
Our tears have an expiration date—
Joy is coming with the morning light.

[Outro]
Hold on through the darkness,
Your story is not done;
Weeping lasts for a night—
But morning surely comes.

Morning is coming - Our Tears Have an Expiration Date

Morning is coming

Scripture shows that if we have been crying, waiting, praying, and silently wondering when our story will finally change, we should hold on to Yahweh’s promise.

Our tears are not wasted, and this painful season will not last forever.

Yahweh knows our sorrow and He will turn it into joy

Our Tears Have an Expiration Date

A Bible Study on Psalm 30:5

“… Weeping may endure for a night,
But joy comes in the morning.”

There are seasons when we cry, wait, pray, and silently wonder when our story will finally change. We may ask Yahweh for help and yet see no immediate answer. The night seems long, and morning feels far away.

Psalm 30:5 gives us a promise to hold onto:

The night is temporary. Yahweh’s favor is enduring. Weeping will not have the final word.

Our tears are not wasted, overlooked, or forgotten. Yahweh sees every one of them. This painful season will not last forever. In His appointed time, Yahweh will turn sorrow into joy.

1. Yahweh Sees Every Tear

We may cry privately where no one else can see us. We may hide our sorrow behind a smile and carry pain that we cannot explain. But we are never suffering unnoticed.

“You number my wanderings;
Put my tears into Your bottle;
Are they not in Your book?”
—Psalm 56:8

David pictured Yahweh collecting his tears in a bottle and recording them in a book. This teaches us that Yahweh does not treat our sorrow as insignificant.

Every tear represents something:

  • A prayer that has not yet been answered
  • A loved one we miss
  • A relationship that has been broken
  • A burden we have carried silently
  • A hope that has not yet been fulfilled
  • A night when we felt completely alone

Others may forget what we have endured, but Yahweh does not forget.

“Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart,
And saves such as have a contrite spirit.”
—Psalm 34:18

A broken heart does not drive Yahweh away. It draws His compassion near.

2. Weeping May Remain for a Night

Psalm 30:5 does not deny that weeping is real. It says:

“Weeping may endure for a night.”

Some translations convey the picture of weeping arriving as a guest for the night. It may enter our lives and remain for a season—but it does not have permission to remain forever.

Some nights last longer than others. A painful “night” may be:

  • A season of loneliness
  • A time of sickness or weakness
  • The death of someone we love
  • Family separation
  • Financial hardship
  • Disappointment or betrayal
  • Years of waiting for an answer

Yahweh does not condemn us for crying during these seasons. Faith does not mean pretending that we are not hurting. Yeshua Himself wept.

“Yeshua wept.”
—John 11:35

Yeshua knew that Lazarus would be resurrected, yet He still shared the sorrow of those who were grieving. Tears are not proof that we have lost faith. Sometimes they are the honest expression of a heart that is still trusting Yahweh while deeply hurting.

3. Waiting Does Not Mean Yahweh Has Forgotten Us

During a long season of waiting, silence can feel like abandonment. We may wonder:

“Has Yahweh heard me?”

“Does He see what I am going through?”

“Will anything ever change?”

Scripture records the same questions:

“How long, O Yahweh? Will You forget me forever?
How long will You hide Your face from me?”
—Psalm 13:1

David was honest about his pain, but he did not end his prayer in despair:

“But I have trusted in Your mercy;
My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation.
I will sing to Yahweh,
Because He has dealt bountifully with me.”
—Psalm 13:5–6

David’s circumstances may not have changed while he was praying, but his focus changed. He remembered Yahweh’s mercy and chose to trust Him.

Yahweh’s silence is not proof of His absence. Waiting is not proof that He has rejected us. His work is often hidden until the appointed time.

“For the vision is yet for an appointed time;
But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie.
Though it tarries, wait for it;
Because it will surely come,
It will not tarry.”
—Habakkuk 2:3

4. Yahweh Is Working While We Wait

We usually see only the present moment, but Yahweh sees the complete story. He knows what He is building in us and where He is leading us.

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love Elohim, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
—Romans 8:28

This does not say that everything happening to us is good. Loss, injustice, betrayal, and separation are painful. But Yahweh can work through every circumstance and bring something good from what was meant to harm us.

Joseph endured betrayal, slavery, false accusations, and imprisonment. For years, his story appeared to be moving in the wrong direction. But Yahweh had not forgotten him.

Joseph eventually told his brothers:

“But as for you, you meant evil against me; but Elohim meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.”
—Genesis 50:20

Joseph’s suffering had an expiration date. The prison was not the end of his story.

Neither is this painful season the end of ours.

5. Yahweh Can Turn Mourning Into Joy

David testified:

“You have turned for me my mourning into dancing;
You have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness.”
—Psalm 30:11

Only Yahweh can take a heart that has been crushed by sorrow and teach it to rejoice again. He may change our circumstances, restore something that was lost, open a new door, or give us strength and peace while we continue waiting.

Yahweh promised His people:

“I will turn their mourning to joy,
Will comfort them,
And make them rejoice rather than sorrow.”
—Jeremiah 31:13

This change may not come according to our preferred timetable. It may not arrive in the exact way we expected. But Yahweh’s promise remains: sorrow will not rule forever.

“Those who sow in tears
Shall reap in joy.
He who continually goes forth weeping,
Bearing seed for sowing,
Shall doubtless come again with rejoicing,
Bringing his sheaves with him.”
—Psalm 126:5–6

Tears can water seeds that will eventually produce a harvest of compassion, wisdom, endurance, and deeper faith.

6. Yahweh Hears Persistent Prayer

Yeshua taught His disciples that they should continue praying and not lose heart.

“Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart.”
—Luke 18:1

An answer that has not yet arrived is not necessarily a prayer that Yahweh has rejected.

Daniel prayed, but the answer was delayed. When the messenger finally came, he told Daniel:

“Do not fear, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand, and to humble yourself before your Elohim, your words were heard.”
—Daniel 10:12

Daniel’s prayer was heard from the first day, even though he had to wait before he saw the answer.

We should not confuse delay with denial. Yahweh may already be working in ways we cannot see.

“Wait on Yahweh;
Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart;
Wait, I say, on Yahweh!”
—Psalm 27:14

7. The Morning Will Come

Psalm 30:5 does not say that weeping might end. It declares:

“Joy comes in the morning.”

Morning is Yahweh’s answer to the night. Darkness cannot prevent the sunrise. It can only remain until the appointed hour.

The morning may come through:

  • An answered prayer
  • A restored relationship
  • An unexpected opportunity
  • Renewed strength
  • Peace after grief
  • A deeper understanding of Yahweh
  • The return of Yeshua
  • The resurrection and reunion with those we love

Some sorrows may remain with us throughout this present life. Scripture does not promise that every painful circumstance will be resolved immediately. But it does promise that pain is temporary when viewed beside Yahweh’s eternal purpose.

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”
—Romans 8:18

The ultimate morning will come when Yeshua returns, the dead are raised, families are reunited, and Yahweh removes every cause of suffering.

“And Elohim will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain.”
—Revelation 21:4

That is why we can confidently say:

Every tear has an expiration date.

8. What Should We Do During the Night?

While waiting for our morning, Scripture teaches us to:

Keep praying

“Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving.”
—Colossians 4:2

Pour out our hearts to Yahweh

“Trust in Him at all times, you people;
Pour out your heart before Him;
Elohim is a refuge for us.”
—Psalm 62:8

Remember His past faithfulness

“I will remember the works of Yahweh;
Surely I will remember Your wonders of old.”
—Psalm 77:11

Refuse to surrender our hope

“It is good that one should hope and wait quietly
For the salvation of Yahweh.”
—Lamentations 3:26

Encourage ourselves with His promises

“Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in Elohim;
For I shall yet praise Him.”
—Psalm 42:11

Notice the words “I shall yet praise Him.” The psalmist was saying, “My story is not finished. I will praise Yahweh again.”

Hold On—Your Story Is Not Finished

If you have been crying, waiting, praying, and silently wondering when your story will change, hold on to Yahweh’s promise.

He has seen every tear.

He has heard every prayer.

He has been present during every lonely night.

He knows the pain you have carried and how long you have carried it.

Your present sorrow is not the final chapter. The same Yahweh who allowed the night to come has also appointed the morning.

“For His anger is but for a moment,
His favor is for life;
Weeping may endure for a night,
But joy comes in the morning.”
—Psalm 30:5

The night has a limit.

Sorrow has a boundary.

Pain does not have the final word.

Our tears have an expiration date.

Morning is coming.

Breathe in: “Yah…”
Breathe out: “…weh.”

A poetic spiritual picture. This expresses a profound scriptural truth:

Every breath we possess comes from Yahweh.

“And Yahweh Elohim formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.”
—Genesis 2:7

“In whose hand is the life of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.”
—Job 12:10

“Let everything that has breath praise Yahweh.”
—Psalm 150:6

The Hebrew name YHWH— contains open, breath-like sounds when pronounced “Yahweh.”“Yah” is also a genuine shortened form of Yahweh’s name found in Scripture.

From our first breath until our last, our lives belong to Yahweh. Our very breathing resembles the gentle sound of His name: “Yah” as we breathe in and “weh” as we breathe out. This gives us a powerful reminder: every breath is a gift from Yahweh, and everything that has breath should praise Him.

Breathe in: Yah.
Breathe out: Weh.
Every breath reminds us of the One who gave us life.

[Verse 1]

Some say Paul brought a different way,
That Torah faded with yesterday;
But Paul taught from the sacred Word,
From Moses and the prophets heard.

He walked in truth, he kept the Way,
He honored Yahweh and obeyed;
He never turned from what was true—
His faith made all things bright and new.

[Pre-Chorus]
The law is holy, just and good,
Forever righteous as it stood;
Grace does not set the sinner free
To walk again in lawlessness.

[Chorus]
Do we make void the law through faith?
Certainly not! We establish it!
Written on hearts by Yahweh’s hand,
By His Spirit we will stand.

Saved by grace through Yeshua’s blood,
Called to walk in what is good;
Faith and truth will never part—
Yahweh, write Your law upon my heart.

[Verse 2]
The Torah shows us what is sin;
It cannot cleanse the guilt within.
Our works could never pay the price—
We need Yeshua’s sacrifice.

Grace brings pardon, makes us new;
Then teaches us what we must do.
We do not earn the life He gives—
We show our faith by how we live.

[Pre-Chorus]
Paul believed the Law and Prophets,
Preached their truth from day to day;
He kept the Sabbath and the Feasts
And never cast Yahweh’s Word away.

[Chorus]
Do we make void the law through faith?
Certainly not! We establish it!
Written on hearts by Yahweh’s hand,
By His Spirit we will stand.

Saved by grace through Yeshua’s blood,
Called to walk in what is good;
Faith and truth will never part—
Yahweh, write Your law upon my heart.

[Bridge]
Not under sin, not under death,
We rise to walk in righteousness;
The flesh was weak, the law was not—
Yahweh’s commandments are not forgot.

Yeshua came not to destroy,
But to fulfill with faithful joy;
The ancient paths are still the Way—
His Word endures beyond today!

[Final Chorus]
Do we make void the law through faith?
Certainly not! We establish it!
Holy, righteous, true and good—
Let it now be understood!

Saved by grace through Yeshua’s blood,
We obey the One we love;
Faith and truth will never part—
Yahweh, write Your law upon my heart.

[Outro]
Paul never taught the law was gone;
Yahweh’s truth is marching on.
Faith and obedience will not part—

Write Your Torah on my heart.
