The difference between, the spirt IN man and the spirit OF God
I have a study on the subject followed by a Scripture comparison chart
The Bible actually speaks of two distinct spirits:
- “the spirit in man”
- “the Spirit of God”
They are not the same thing.
1️⃣ The Spirit in Man
The clearest verse is:
“But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.” — Job 32:8
And also:
“For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him?” — 1 Corinthians 2:11
What it is:
The spirit in man is:
- Not a separate conscious being
- Not an immortal soul
- Not something that thinks on its own
It is the God-given life-essence and mental capacity that:
- Gives humans understanding above animals
- Allows reasoning, creativity, moral awareness
- Stores memory and personality
Ecclesiastes 12:7 says:
“Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”
This does not say a conscious person goes to heaven.
It says the spirit returns to God — the life-spirit that He gave.
Just as a computer has hardware but needs electricity to function, the body needs:
- Breath (physical life)
- The spirit in man (human intellect)
When a person dies:
- The body returns to dust
- The spirit returns to God
- The person is unconscious (Psalm 146:4; Ecclesiastes 9:5)
This shows perfectly that “death is sleep.”
2️⃣ The Spirit of God
Now notice the second part of 1 Corinthians 2:11:
“Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.”
The Spirit of God is something entirely different.
It is:
- God’s power
- God’s mind
- God’s nature
- God’s presence
Jesus said:
“The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” — John 6:63
The Spirit of God:
- Reveals spiritual truth
- Produces God’s character
- Begets us as children of God
Romans 8:16:
“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.”
Notice: His Spirit works with our spirit.
3️⃣ The Difference (Simple Comparison)

๐ฟ How They Work Together
You could say:
- The spirit in man makes you physically alive and mentally human.
- The Spirit of God makes you spiritually alive and developing toward eternal life.
Without the spirit in man → no human life.
Without the Spirit of God → no spiritual life.
๐ In the Resurrection
At the resurrection:
- God restores the person.
- The spirit in man is reunited with a new body.
- Those begotten by God are born into His Family.
That is why the Spirit of God is so precious now — it is the guarantee of what is coming.

How this connects to being “begotten” vs. “born” sons of God
The two spirits explain the difference between being begotten now and born later as sons of God.
Let’s walk through it simply and clearly.
๐ฑ Step 1 — Human Birth (Physical Pattern)
At physical conception:
- A father begets
- Life begins
- Growth follows
- Birth comes later
That pattern is intentional.
God designed physical birth to mirror spiritual birth.
๐ฟ Step 2 — Begotten Now (Spiritual Conception)
When God gives His Spirit:
“Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth.” — James 1:18
“Being born again… by the word of God.” — 1 Peter 1:23
The Greek word often translated “born” here can also mean begotten — like conception.
At this stage:
- You still have flesh.
- You still struggle.
- You still die physically.
- But you now have God’s Spirit joined with your spirit (Romans 8:16).
This is spiritual conception.
You are not yet spirit-born.
You are spiritually begotten.
๐พ Step 3 — The Resurrection = Birth
Now notice what Scripture says about Christ:
“The firstborn from the dead.” — Colossians 1:18
“The firstbegotten of the dead.” — Revelation 1:5
Jesus was begotten by the Father in the womb of Mary —
but He was born as a glorified Son of God at the resurrection.
That is the pattern.
Romans 8:23 speaks of:
“waiting for the adoption… the redemption of our body.”
The redemption of the body happens at resurrection — that is the moment of birth into the God Family.
๐ The Two Spirits and This Process
Here is how it connects:
1️⃣ The Spirit in Man
- Makes you physically alive
- Makes you a human son of Adam
2️⃣ The Spirit of God (given now)
- Begets you spiritually
- Places God’s nature within you
- Begins transformation
3️⃣ Resurrection
- Flesh is changed to spirit (1 Corinthians 15:44)
- Mortality puts on immortality (1 Corinthians 15:53)
- You are born into the Family of God
Not adopted externally —
but born through transformation.

Physical Birth → Human Life → Physical Death (sleep)

Spiritual Begettal (now, by God’s Spirit)

Resurrection → Spirit Body → Born Son of God
Just as a baby in the womb does not yet breathe air,
a begotten Christian does not yet have immortality.
Birth comes later.

This understanding:
- Preserves the truth of death as sleep
- Explains why we are still flesh now
- Explains why salvation is not complete yet
- Gives deep meaning to the resurrection
It also explains why the Spirit of God is called:
- A “down payment” (2 Corinthians 1:22)
- “Firstfruits” (Romans 8:23)
It is the guarantee of birth to come.
The dead are waiting in the grave
And their birth day is coming.

The same Greek word (gennaล) is translated:
- “begotten”
- “born”
- “brought forth”
Context determines whether it refers to:
- Conception
or - Delivery / full birth
That’s why many verses about being “born of God” can logically refer to begettal now, while others clearly describe the resurrection birth.
