The Bible explains:
why death exists,
what condition our loved ones are in now,
why Yahweh allows death for this age, and
what He promises will happen next.
Why Does Death Happen?
Death was not part of Yahweh's original purpose.
When sin entered the world, death followed.
"Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men..." (Romans 5:12)
"For the wages of sin is death..." (Romans 6:23)
Because all humans are descendants of Adam, all eventually die.
"For as in Adam all die..." (1 Corinthians 15:22)
What Is the Current State of Our Loved Ones?
The Bible describes death as a sleep.
"Our friend Lazarus sleepeth..." (John 11:11-14)
"Many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake..." (Daniel 12:2)
The dead are unconscious.
"For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing..." (Ecclesiastes 9:5)
"His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish." (Psalm 146:4)
They are not watching us suffer.
They are not looking down from heaven.
They are resting in the grave awaiting the resurrection.
"There is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave." (Ecclesiastes 9:10)
Why Were They Taken?
Scripture shows several reasons Yahweh permits death in this present age.
1. Human life is temporary
"For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away." (James 4:14)
2. To spare some from future suffering
"The righteous perisheth... he shall enter into peace: they shall rest in their beds." (Isaiah 57:1-2)
3. Because this present world is not our final home
Yahweh is preparing a Kingdom where death will be removed forever.
"For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come." (Hebrews 13:14)
What Happens Next?
The First Resurrection
When Yeshua returns, those who died faithfully will rise first.
"The dead in Messiah shall rise first." (1 Thessalonians 4:16)
"Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection." (Revelation 20:6)
These will be changed into immortal spirit beings.
"This mortal must put on immortality." (1 Corinthians 15:53)
The Second Resurrection
After the thousand-year reign of Yeshua, the rest of humanity will be raised.
"The rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished." (Revelation 20:5)
"All that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth." (John 5:28-29)
This is the great opportunity for those who never truly knew Yahweh to learn His ways and choose life.
The Great Family Reunion
One of the most comforting truths in Scripture is that death is not the end.
Those asleep in the grave will awaken as if only a moment has passed.
For them, the next conscious moment after death will be resurrection life.
"Thy dead men shall live... awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust." (Isaiah 26:19)
Imagine a mother seeing her child again.
A husband seeing his wife again.
A grandfather meeting descendants he never knew.
All the pain, tears, and separation will finally end.
The Final Promise
Yahweh does not intend for death to exist forever.
"He will swallow up death in victory; and Yahweh Elohim will wipe away tears from off all faces." (Isaiah 25:8)
"And Elohim shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying..." (Revelation 21:4)
The Hope of Scripture
Your loved one is not suffering.
Your loved one is not watching your grief.
Your loved one is asleep in the grave, resting peacefully.
And if Yahweh's promises are true, every passing day brings us one day closer to the resurrection, one day closer to reunion, and one day closer to a world where death will never separate families again.
"For yet a little while, and He that shall come will come, and will not delay."

We are one day closer to the end of our journey in this life, and one day closer to seeing our loved ones again.
