LEARN NOT THE WAY OF THE HEATHEN
Why Followers of The Way Must Reject Pagan Worship and Keep Yahweh’s Holy Days
“Thus saith Yahweh, Learn not the way of the heathen.”
— Jeremiah 10:2
Yahweh never gave mankind permission to decide how He should be worshiped. He revealed His commandments, His Sabbath, and His appointed Holy Days. Followers of The Way must therefore examine every religious tradition by Scripture—not by popularity, sentiment, or how long people have practiced it.
A celebration does not become acceptable merely because people attach the name of Yeshua to it. Yahweh does not want pagan worship customs “Christianized” and offered to Him.
1. “Learn Not the Way of the Heathen”
Jeremiah gave Israel a direct warning:
“Thus saith Yahweh, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.”
— Jeremiah 10:2
Yahweh’s people were not to imitate the nations around them. They were to remain separate from their false religions, superstitions, and worship customs.
“And ye shall not walk in the manners of the nation, which I cast out before you.”
— Leviticus 20:23
“After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan… shall ye not do.”
— Leviticus 18:3
Yahweh did not tell Israel to adopt the nations’ traditions and give them new meanings. He commanded His people to reject those ways.
2. Do Not Worship Yahweh as the Pagans Worship Their Gods
Scripture addresses this question plainly:
“Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them… and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.
Thou shalt not do so unto Yahweh thy Elohim…
What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.”
— Deuteronomy 12:30–32
Notice the command: “Thou shalt not do so unto Yahweh.”
Yahweh does not accept every form of worship merely because the worshiper claims it is directed toward Him. We must not borrow religious customs from pagan worship and attempt to make them acceptable by changing their names or attaching biblical language to them.
The question is not:
- Does the celebration feel good?
- Is it a family tradition?
- Does nearly everyone observe it?
- Has it been called “Christian” for centuries?
The question is:
Did Yahweh command it, and does it agree with His Word?
3. A Pagan Custom Does Not Become Holy When Renamed
When Israel made the golden calf, Aaron tried to associate the celebration with Yahweh:
“And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to Yahweh.”
— Exodus 32:5
They attempted to worship Yahweh through a religious image and customs learned from Egypt. They even called the celebration “a feast to Yahweh.”
But Yahweh did not accept it.
“And Yahweh said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people… have corrupted themselves: they have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them.”
— Exodus 32:7–8
Calling it a feast to Yahweh did not make it one. Their sincerity did not sanctify their disobedience.
This establishes an important principle:
We cannot take something derived from false worship, attach Yahweh’s name to it, and expect Him to accept it.
4. Nadab and Abihu Offered What Yahweh Had Not Commanded
“And Nadab and Abihu… offered strange fire before Yahweh, which he commanded them not. And there went out fire from Yahweh, and devoured them.”
— Leviticus 10:1–2
Their offering may have appeared religious, but it was not what Yahweh commanded.
Yahweh then explained:
“I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified.”
— Leviticus 10:3
Worship must honor Yahweh as holy. We do not have authority to invent worship practices—or adopt them from other religions—and then offer them to Him.
5. Human Tradition Can Make Worship Vain
Yeshua rebuked religious leaders for placing human traditions above Yahweh’s commandments:
“Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of Elohim, ye hold the tradition of men.”
— Mark 7:7–8
He continued:
“Full well ye reject the commandment of Elohim, that ye may keep your own tradition.”
— Mark 7:9
Tradition is not harmless when it replaces Yahweh’s instructions. Worship may be emotional, beautiful, sincere, and widely accepted—and still be vain worship.
Yeshua said true worshipers must worship according to truth:
“The true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth… Elohim is Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
— John 4:23–24
Truth is determined by Yahweh’s Word:
“Thy word is truth.”
— John 17:17
6. Yahweh Forbids Mixing True and False Worship
Yahweh repeatedly warned Israel against religious mixture:
“Ye shall utterly destroy all the places, wherein the nations which ye shall possess served their gods.”
— Deuteronomy 12:2
“And ye shall overthrow their altars, and break their pillars… for thou shalt worship no other god: for Yahweh, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous Elohim.”
— Exodus 34:13–14
The prophet Elijah challenged Israel:
“How long halt ye between two opinions? if Yahweh be Elohim, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him.”
— 1 Kings 18:21
Yahweh does not accept a mixture of His truth with religious customs inherited from pagan worship. Followers of The Way must choose whom they will obey.
7. “Christianized” Pagan Holidays Are Not Yahweh’s Holy Days
Christmas, Easter, and other traditional religious holidays are not commanded as annual observances in Scripture. Neither Yeshua nor His apostles commanded His followers to observe them.
Changing the meaning assigned to a custom does not automatically change its religious foundation. Giving a pagan-derived observance a “Christian” explanation does not make it one of Yahweh’s appointed times.
Scripture commands us to test religious practices:
“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:21
“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of Elohim.”
— 1 John 4:1
Our standard must be Scripture—not inherited tradition.
8. Yahweh Has Already Given Us His Holy Days
We do not need to invent celebrations for Yahweh. He has already revealed His appointed times.
“Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of Yahweh, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts.”
— Leviticus 23:2
These are not merely “Jewish holidays.” Yahweh calls them:
“My feasts.”
The Hebrew word translated “feasts” is moedim, meaning appointed times. Yahweh Himself appointed them.
Yahweh’s weekly and annual appointed times
- The Seventh-Day Sabbath
Leviticus 23:3; Exodus 20:8–11 - Passover
Leviticus 23:5; 1 Corinthians 5:7 - The Feast of Unleavened Bread
Leviticus 23:6–8; 1 Corinthians 5:8 - Pentecost—the Feast of Weeks
Leviticus 23:15–21; Acts 2:1 - The Feast of Trumpets
Leviticus 23:23–25 - The Day of Atonement
Leviticus 23:26–32 - The Feast of Tabernacles
Leviticus 23:33–43; Zechariah 14:16 - The Last Great Day
Leviticus 23:36, 39; John 7:37
These days reveal Yahweh’s plan of salvation, resurrection, judgment, reconciliation, and the coming Kingdom.
Why replace Yahweh’s appointed days with celebrations He never commanded?
9. Yeshua Observed Yahweh’s Appointed Times
Yeshua did not observe a new calendar of “Christianized” pagan holidays. He kept the Sabbath and Yahweh’s biblical festivals.
“And, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day.”
— Luke 4:16
“Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand… But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast.”
— John 7:2, 10
“In the last day, that great day of the feast, Yeshua stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.”
— John 7:37
Yeshua also kept Passover with His disciples:
“With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer.”
— Luke 22:15
If we claim to follow Yeshua, we should walk as He walked:
“He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.”
— 1 John 2:6
10. The Apostles Continued Observing Yahweh’s Holy Days
After Yeshua’s death and resurrection, His followers continued to recognize the biblical festivals.
Passover and Unleavened Bread
“For even Messiah our passover is sacrificed for us: therefore let us keep the feast.”
— 1 Corinthians 5:7–8
Pentecost
“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.”
— Acts 2:1
“For Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus… for he hasted, if it were possible for him, to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost.”
— Acts 20:16
The Day of Atonement
“Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past…”
— Acts 27:9
“The fast” was a recognized reference to the Day of Atonement.
The apostolic assembly did not abandon Yahweh’s appointed times in favor of Christmas, Easter, or Sunday worship.
11. Yahweh’s Holy Days Point to His Plan
Yahweh’s appointed times are rich with meaning:
Appointed time | Meaning in Yahweh’s plan |
Sabbath | Rest, creation, and the coming Kingdom |
Passover | Yeshua’s sacrifice for sin |
Unleavened Bread | Removing sin and walking in sincerity and truth |
Pentecost | Firstfruits and the giving of the Spirit |
Trumpets | The return of Yeshua and resurrection |
Atonement | Reconciliation and the removal of Satan |
Tabernacles | Yeshua’s millennial reign |
Last Great Day | Resurrection, judgment, and Yahweh’s offer of salvation |
Humanly invented religious holidays can obscure this plan. Yahweh’s Holy Days reveal it.
12. Followers of The Way Must Come Out and Be Separate
The earliest disciples were known as followers of The Way:
“But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the Elohim of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets.”
— Acts 24:14
Followers of The Way cannot simply follow whatever the religious world accepts. Yahweh calls His people to come out of spiritual confusion:
“Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins.”
— Revelation 18:4
“Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith Yahweh.”
— 2 Corinthians 6:17
Separation is not about feeling superior to others. It is about loving Yahweh enough to obey Him.
The Choice Before Us
Yahweh has not left us without days on which to honor Him. He gave us His Sabbath and His annual appointed times.
We must choose between:
- Yahweh’s commandments or human tradition
- His Holy Days or man-made religious holidays
- Pure worship or religious mixture
- The Way of Yahweh or the way of the nations
“Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice.”
— 1 Samuel 15:22
“If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
— John 14:15
We cannot improve upon Yahweh’s instructions. We cannot please Him by replacing His appointed times with “Christianized” pagan traditions.
The message of Scripture is clear:
Learn not the way of the heathen.
Do not worship Yahweh as the nations worship their gods.
Reject traditions that replace His commandments.
Keep the Sabbath and the Holy Days Yahweh Himself appointed.
Followers of The Way must worship Yahweh in spirit, in truth, and in obedience.
