IS MONEY THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL?

IS MONEY THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL?

We see from scripture that it is not money that is the root of all evil but the desire and pursuit of it that is.

The Bible does not say that money itself is evil. Rather, it warns that the love of money—the desire, craving, and pursuit of wealth above Yahweh—is what leads people into many kinds of sin.

Here are the key Scriptures:

1. The root is the love of money, not money itself

"For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."
— 1 Timothy 6:10 (NKJV)

Notice carefully:

  • It does not say "Money is the root of all evil."
  • It says "The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil."

Money is simply a tool. It can be used for good or for evil.

2. Yahweh warns against loving riches

"He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity."
— Ecclesiastes 5:10

The problem is an insatiable desire for more.

3. Yeshua warned about serving wealth

"No one can serve two masters... You cannot serve God and mammon."
— Matthew 6:24

Money becomes dangerous when it becomes our master.

4. We are told to be content

"Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have."
— Hebrews 13:5

Contentment protects us from the pursuit of wealth becoming an idol.

5. Rich people are not condemned merely for being rich

Paul instructed:

"Command those who are rich... not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God... Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share."
— 1 Timothy 6:17–19

Wealth itself is not condemned; trusting in it or loving it is.

Biblical Examples

Right Use of Money

Wrong Love of Money

Abraham was wealthy and faithful.

Judas Iscariot betrayed Yeshua for money.

Job was blessed with great wealth.

Achan coveted treasure and brought judgment on Israel.

Joseph of Arimathea used his resources to honor Yeshua.

Ananias and Sapphira lied because of greed.

The Biblical Principle

Money is:

  • A tool.
  • A blessing when used according to Yahweh's will.
  • A means to provide for family, help the poor, and support righteous work.

The danger comes when we:

  • Love money.
  • Pursue wealth above Yahweh.
  • Trust riches instead of Yahweh.
  • Become greedy or covetous.

Summary

A more accurate statement than the common saying is:

"Money is not the root of all evil. The love of money—the greedy desire and relentless pursuit of wealth—is a root of all kinds of evil."

That wording reflects the teaching of 1 Timothy 6:10 much more closely than the popular misquotation.
