Mankind Cannot Rule Itself

Why Yahweh Will Intervene Before Humanity Destroys Itself

Across the world, war, political division, and struggles for power reveal how desperately mankind needs righteous leadership. Conflicts involving Ukraine and Iran continue to threaten lives and deepen international uncertainty. Meanwhile, election battles and fears about socialism, communism, and government control leave many people anxious about the future.

Yet humanity’s deepest problem goes beyond any one party or political ideology: we have rejected Yahweh’s instruction and trusted in our own understanding. Jeremiah 10:23 declares that it is not in man to direct his own steps. Yeshua warned that the coming tribulation would threaten the survival of all flesh—but also promised that those days would be shortened (Matthew 24:21–22). This study examines mankind’s failure to rule itself and Yahweh’s promise to intervene before humanity’s destruction is complete.

Human history reveals a painful pattern: people seek peace, yet prepare for war. Nations promise freedom, yet often produce oppression. Knowledge increases, but wisdom and righteousness do not automatically follow.

Scripture explains why. Humanity was not created to live successfully apart from Yahweh. When people reject His instruction and determine good and evil for themselves, even their greatest achievements cannot cure the problems within the human heart.

Yet Yahweh will not allow human rebellion to end in the destruction of all mankind. Yeshua warned of a coming tribulation so severe that no flesh would survive unless those days were shortened—and He promised that they would be.

1. “It Is Not in Man … to Direct His Own Steps”

“O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.”
— Jeremiah 10:23, KJV

Jeremiah acknowledges a fundamental limitation: human beings need their Creator’s direction.

We can build cities, develop technology, and establish governments. But the ability to accomplish great things does not mean we possess the wisdom to govern ourselves righteously.

Proverbs gives a related warning:

“There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”
— Proverbs 14:12, KJV

What seems right to humanity can still lead to destruction. Sincerity, confidence, and popular approval do not make a path righteous.

Related scriptures: Proverbs 3:5–7; Proverbs 16:25; Isaiah 55:8–9.

2. The Problem Begins in the Human Heart

The failure of human rule involves more than choosing the wrong political system. Scripture identifies a deeper problem:

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”
— Jeremiah 17:9, KJV

Human governments are composed of human beings, subject to pride, greed, fear, ambition, and self-deception. Changing leaders cannot, by itself, change human nature.

James traces conflict to desires that people refuse to restrain:

“From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?”
— James 4:1, KJV

Paul explains that the fleshly mind resists Yahweh’s authority and His law (Romans 8:7). This is why lasting peace requires more than treaties, elections, or economic prosperity. It requires repentance and a changed heart.

Related scriptures: Mark 7:21–23; Galatians 5:19–23; Ezekiel 36:26–27.

3. Humanity Chose Independence from Yahweh

In Genesis 3, the serpent tempted the first humans to distrust their Creator and take the determination of good and evil into their own hands.

The temptation was more than eating forbidden fruit. It was the promise that they could decide how to live apart from Yahweh’s instruction.

That choice established a pattern that continues today:

  • Yahweh gives instruction.
  • Humanity questions or rejects it.
  • People substitute their own standards.
  • The consequences bring suffering and death.

Ecclesiastes describes the result:

“God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.”
— Ecclesiastes 7:29, KJV

Yahweh did not create humanity to fail. Mankind’s departure from His ways has produced its bitter harvest.

Related scriptures: Genesis 2:16–17; Genesis 3:1–19; Romans 5:12.

4. Yahweh Allows People to Experience the Consequences

Why does Yahweh permit humanity to continue down destructive paths?

One biblical answer is that He sometimes allows people to experience what they have insisted on choosing.

Psalm 81 records Yahweh’s lament over Israel’s refusal to listen:

“So I gave them up unto their own hearts’ lust: and they walked in their own counsels.”
— Psalm 81:12, KJV

The following verses reveal His desire: that His people would listen to Him and walk in His ways (Psalm 81:13–16).

Romans 1 similarly describes people rejecting the Creator, followed by Yahweh giving them over to the consequences of their choices (Romans 1:21–32).

Permission does not mean approval. Yahweh’s patience with rebellion does not mean that rebellion is harmless or that He has lost control.

These passages establish a pattern of allowing consequences. They do not tell us the specific reason for every tragedy, nor do they mean that everyone who suffers is personally more wicked than others (Luke 13:1–5).

Related scriptures: Galatians 6:7–8; Jeremiah 2:19; Ecclesiastes 8:11.

5. Human Government Cannot Bring Lasting Peace Apart from Yahweh

Scripture repeatedly warns against placing ultimate confidence in human rulers:

“Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.”
— Psalm 146:3, KJV

Leaders are mortal. Their plans are limited, and their promises cannot guarantee the future.

Isaiah describes a society that has rejected righteousness:

“The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings.”
— Isaiah 59:8, KJV

Human authorities can restrain wrongdoing and serve useful purposes (Romans 13:1–7). Nevertheless, no human government can establish Yahweh’s everlasting Kingdom or remove sin from the human heart.

The final hope of mankind rests in Yahweh’s government under Yeshua.

Related scriptures: Psalm 118:8–9; Isaiah 2:22; Daniel 2:44.

6. Humanity Will Reach the Brink of Destruction

Yeshua’s warning in Matthew 24 directly addresses the severity of the crisis ahead:

“For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.”
— Matthew 24:21, KJV

He then declares:

“And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened.”
— Matthew 24:22, KJV

In this setting of extreme tribulation, the warning concerns survival: unless those days were cut short, no flesh would survive.

Yeshua describes a crisis that would leave no human survivors if allowed to continue unchecked. But He also promises that it will be stopped.

The passage supports the central message of this study: Yahweh will allow the world to reach an extreme crisis, but He will intervene before its destruction is complete.

We should distinguish that promise from an explanation Scripture does not explicitly give. Matthew 24 does not say that teaching humanity its inability to rule itself is the only reason Yahweh permits this crisis. That lesson is a conclusion drawn from the broader biblical account of rebellion, consequences, judgment, and restoration.

Related scriptures: Mark 13:19–20; Daniel 12:1; Jeremiah 30:7.

7. Yahweh’s Patience Is an Opportunity to Repent

The apparent delay in judgment should never be mistaken for indifference.

Second Peter 3:9 explains that Yahweh is patient, desiring repentance rather than destruction.

Ezekiel expresses His heart clearly:

“For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.”
— Ezekiel 18:32, KJV

Yahweh’s warnings are calls to turn back while there is time. The proper response is not to wait for conditions to become unbearable, but to seek Him now.

Related scriptures: Isaiah 55:6–7; Ezekiel 33:11; Romans 2:4–5.

8. Yeshua Will Return and End the Rule of Rebellious Kingdoms

Humanity’s final deliverance will come through the return of Yeshua.

Matthew 24:29–31 places His appearing after the tribulation. The Son of Man comes with power and great glory, and His elect are gathered.

Daniel describes the establishment of a government that human powers cannot overthrow:

“And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed.”
— Daniel 2:44, KJV

Revelation 11:15 announces the transfer of the world’s rule to Yahweh and His Messiah. Revelation 19:11–16 portrays Yeshua returning to judge and rule in righteousness.

The answer to failed human rule is the Kingdom of Yahweh.

Related scriptures: Daniel 7:13–14, 27; Zechariah 14:3–9; Revelation 19:19–21.

9. Mankind Will Finally Be Taught the Way of Peace

Yahweh’s intervention will accomplish more than stopping destruction. His Kingdom will establish righteous instruction and judgment.

Isaiah describes nations coming to learn His ways:

“For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.”
— Isaiah 2:3, KJV

The result follows:

“They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.”
— Isaiah 2:4, KJV

Notice the connection: Yahweh teaches His ways, judges righteously, and nations cease learning war.

The world will finally receive the instruction it has so often rejected.

Related scriptures: Micah 4:1–4; Isaiah 9:6–7; Isaiah 11:1–9; Jeremiah 31:31–34.

10. How Should We Live Now?

Knowing that human rule will fail should move us toward faithful obedience, compassion, and hope.

Trust Yahweh above human leaders.
Recognize the limits of political promises and place your ultimate confidence in Him (Psalm 146:3–5).

Repent and practice His ways now.
Allow His instruction to govern your own conduct, words, and decisions (Ecclesiastes 12:13–14; James 1:22).

Refuse hatred and revenge.
We cannot proclaim the coming Kingdom while embracing the cruelty and bitterness of this age (Romans 12:17–21).

Remain watchful without setting dates.
Yeshua commanded watchfulness while making clear that the day and hour are not ours to know (Matthew 24:36, 42).

Encourage one another with the promise of redemption.
Yeshua told His followers:

“Look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.”
— Luke 21:28, KJV

Closing Message

Mankind’s deepest problem is its refusal to be governed by its Creator. Without Yahweh’s direction, human wisdom cannot overcome the selfishness, deception, and violence that repeatedly destroy peace.

Yeshua warned that this age would reach a crisis so terrible that no flesh would survive unless those days were shortened. But those days will be shortened. Yahweh will intervene.

The future does not belong forever to corrupt rulers, warfare, or human pride. It belongs to Yahweh and His Kingdom under Yeshua.

Seek Him now. Learn His ways now. Place your hope in the King who will save humanity and teach the nations peace.
