SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES

 

Here is a Bible study showing that we should search the scripture daily and points out that Yeshua and the writers of the New Testament only had what we call today the OLD Testament. There was NO New Testament.

(What Scripture Were They Searching?)

📖 1. The Command by Example — The Bereans

Acts 17:10–11

“These were more noble… in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

👉 The Bereans were commended for testing teaching against Scripture — daily.

📖 2. What “Scripture” Did They Have?

At that time:

• There was NO New Testament yet written or compiled
• The apostles were still alive
• The Gospels and letters were not yet gathered

👉 Therefore, the “Scriptures” they searched were:

✔ The Law (Torah)
✔ The Prophets
✔ The Writings

👉 What we call today: The Old Testament

📖 3. Yeshua Pointed to the Same Scriptures

John 5:39

“Search the scriptures… they are they which testify of me.”

👉 Yeshua told people to search the Scriptures already available —
NOT just future writings.

Luke 24:27

“Beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them…”

👉 Yeshua taught from:

• Moses (Torah)
• Prophets

✔ Again — what we call the Old Testament

📖 4. The Apostles Used Only These Scriptures

2 Timothy 3:15–16

“From a child thou hast known the holy scriptures…”

👉 Timothy grew up knowing Scripture before New Testament writings existed.

Acts 18:28

“...showing by the scriptures that Yeshua was Messiah.”

👉 Apollos proved Messiahship using existing Scriptures — not New Testament books.

📖 5. Even the New Testament Points BACK

The New Testament constantly says:

• “It is written…”
• “According to the Scriptures…”

👉 These references point to the Old Testament writings

⚠️ 6. Critical Truth Most People Miss

👉 The early believers:

• Did NOT carry New Testaments
• Did NOT quote Matthew, John, or Paul as “Scripture” yet
• Tested EVERYTHING using the existing Scriptures

🔍 7. What This Means for Us Today

✔ We are commanded to search daily
✔ We are to test all teaching
✔ We must use the full foundation of Scripture

📖 Supporting Command

Isaiah 8:20

“To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”

⚔️ FINAL CONCLUSION

👉 The Bereans were called noble because they:

• Didn’t blindly believe
• Didn’t trust authority alone
• Checked everything against Scripture daily

👉 And that Scripture was:

💥 Bottom Line

If it doesn’t agree with the Scriptures Yeshua used…
it shouldn’t be accepted today.
