THE TRUTH IS SO COMFORTING
A Message to Those Who Have Lost Someone They Love
When someone we love dies, people often try to comfort us by saying:
“They are in heaven looking down on you.”
Although these words are spoken with kindness, consider what that would actually mean. Would our loved ones truly be at peace if they were watching us grieve, suffer, become sick, struggle financially, or endure the painful difficulties of this life?
A loving Creator would not make them witnesses to our sorrow.
The Bible gives us a far more comforting truth: our loved ones are peacefully resting in the grave. They are not suffering, worrying, or watching the troubles taking place on the earth.
“For the living know that they will die; but the dead know nothing.”
—Ecclesiastes 9:5
The dead are not conscious of the passing of time. They are not looking down from heaven. They are not watching their families cry or witnessing the pain of those they left behind.
“His sons come to honor, and he does not know it; they are brought low, and he does not perceive it.”
—Job 14:21
The Bible repeatedly describes death as sleep.
“Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may wake him up.”
—John 11:11
Lazarus was not watching his sisters from heaven. He was asleep in death until Yeshua called him from the grave. When Yeshua cried, “Lazarus, come forth,” Lazarus awakened and came out of the tomb.
This is the wonderful hope Yahweh gives us.
Our loved ones are resting peacefully. They are unaware of the suffering taking place in this world. To them, no time is passing. Their next conscious moment will be the moment Yahweh awakens them in the resurrection.
“Your dead shall live; together with my dead body they shall arise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in dust.”
—Isaiah 26:19
Yeshua promised:
“The hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth.”
—John 5:28–29
Notice where they are when Yeshua calls them: in their graves. They are sleeping, awaiting His voice.
This truth does not take away our grief. We still miss their voices, their smiles, their embraces, and their presence in our lives. But it gives us something solid to hold on to.
They are not watching us suffer.
They are not worrying about us.
They are not experiencing pain.
They are resting peacefully.
A loving Creator has mercifully shielded them from every sorrow that followed their death. Yahweh remembers them perfectly, and not one of them is forgotten.
“Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands.”
—Isaiah 49:16
The grave is not the end of their story. The same Yahweh who gave them life remembers every detail of who they are. At the appointed time, He will call them, awaken them, and restore them to life.
We do not have to imagine our loved ones watching our tears from heaven. We can know they are sleeping peacefully, protected from the suffering of this world, until the glorious day when Yeshua calls them from their graves.
The truth is so comforting:
Our loved ones are resting.
Yahweh remembers them.
Yeshua will awaken them.
And we will embrace them again in the resurrection.
