In the beginning, Yahweh made
The heavens and the earth;
Perfect were the works of His hands,
Beautiful from their birth.
He did not form the earth in vain,
Or make a world of night;
He formed it to be inhabited,
In order, life, and light.

But something changed upon the earth;
The darkness covered all.
Creation had become a waste
After rebellion’s fall.

The shining cherub lifted up

But Yahweh cast the rebel down;
Like lightning Satan fell.
The earth became a wilderness,
A dark and empty shell.

Tohu and bohu—waste and void,
The darkness veiled the deep;
But Yahweh’s Spirit moved upon
The waters in their sleep.

The sun and moon marked times and years,

And birds flew through the sky;
The creatures walked upon the land,
As life was multiplied.
Then Yahweh formed mankind at last,
To live upon the earth;
And everything His hands restored
Was very good in worth.

Darkness could not overcome
The purpose of the Holy One.
What had become a ruined place
Was covered once again with grace;
Yahweh spoke, and life returned—
The face of all the earth renewed.
